whitneyblogFebruary 13, 2012 11:00am CST (R.I.P. Whitney, Grammy Night, Katy Perry Slams Ex, Gossip Tidbits and Hottie of the Week) Buen dia, CityVida readers! Happy Monday and Happy Valentine’s week. That’s right, this is the week of “el amor y la amistad” and in the spirit of love, here is some chisme for all you gossip lovers.

R.I.P. Whitney

This week, we will start off with some sad and shocking news. A beloved icon, Whitney Houston, passed away this past Saturday at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where she was staying in preparation for the Grammys. She was 48 years young. Although autopsy and toxicology results are still pending, initial reports state that Whitney Young had a prescription for Xanax, due to anxiety issues she had been experiencing as of late. It is also reported that the night before her death, she was partying hard and drinking a lot of alcohol, that with combined with her medication, may have caused her drowsiness. She was found Saturday afternoon, face down in her bathtub. It has been confirmed that there was water in her lungs, though reports are saying that Whitney died due to the combination of her meds and alcohol, and not drowning. Either way, it is an extremely tragic way to go for someone so talented. Her daughter Bobbi Kristina was rushed to the hospital two times since her mother’s passing; she is not coping well with her loss. Her family fears she may be suicidal and her father Bobby Brown cancelled his show last night to fly out to be with her. It is truly sad how Whitney’s life ended, and we extend our condolences to her family and friends as they deal with this unexpected loss.

Grammy Night

Speaking of the Grammys, those were held this past Sunday. Obviously, Whitney’s death the day before put a slight damper on the celebration, with host L.L Cool J beginning the show with a prayer in memory of Whitney. There were a few standing ovations for Whitney during the telecast, but as they say, the show must go on, and that it did. There was a small Whitney tribute, with Jennifer Hudson singing a beautiful rendition of one of Whitney’s greatest hits, “I Will Always Love You”, that brought tears to my eyes as well as goose bumps. I can admit I really tuned in to watch Coldplay perform one of my favorites off their new album, “Princess of China” with Rihanna, and though I did enjoy their performance, I felt Rihanna’s vocals were a bit off. Another act who did not impress me was Nicki Minaj’s. I shall refrain from judging her, but let me just say, there’s a point where people get tired of attention seeking antics. Adele gave her comeback performance last night, after recovering from throat surgery, and I must say, she still sounds amazing. The rest of the awards show consisted mostly of musical performances, with what seemed to be only a handful of awards being given out, most of whom Adele deservedly won. A lot of the awards were announced before the show and only la crème de la crème were shown on TV apparently. On that note, several Latino groups were protesting the Grammys, as they are not happy with the merger of some Latino categories, and elimination of others. I guess the Grammy people figured no one would notice, since they didn’t show any of them live, anyway. Bad job, Grammys. We definitely notice the lack of Latino presence.

katygrammyblogKaty Slams Ex?

Katy Perry was also present at the Grammys, presenting her new single “Part of Me”, which basically seemed to be a middle finger to soon to be ex husband Russell Brand. Even my husband noticed that the lyrics were very angry and fitting. I’m not sure if she wrote this song inspired by real life, or if she directly meant it as a jab at Russell, but with lyrics like “You can keep your diamond ring, in fact you can keep everything, except for me”, it must sting a little. This was a little surprising coming from Katy, as it seemed the pair ended on relatively good terms. This week, Brand even went as far as rejecting his rights to half of Katy’s fortune, as the pair was married without a prenuptial agreement. That amounts to a little over $20 million dollars that Brand walked away from. To me, that was very honorable of him, as some men even go as far as claiming spousal support when filing for divorce (I’m talking to you, Eric Benet). Maybe Katy’s smiley face signature on the court documents should’ve been a red flag as to her state of mind? Whether Katy just wanted a hit on her hands, or if she’s really trying to send a message to Brand, the song has the makings of being the perfect “f-you” anthem for all the heartbroken people out there. There’s a silver lining to every divorce, I guess.

Custodial Conundrum

Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry’s custody battle is getting UGLY. With Aubry being accused of hitting Nahla’s nanny while she was holding her, and Halle requesting permission to move Nahla with her to France, where boyfriend Olivier Martinez is from, these two are making Katy Perry and Russell Brand look like saints. It seems these two are forgetting about their daughter and just focusing on what they want to do. Halle wants to move to France because she claims she “fears for her life”, as she’s had a bad experience with a stalker who has recently been released from jail and no longer feels safe in the states. Of course, as I mentioned earlier, her boyfriend Martinez resides in France, which I’m sure is no coincidence. Needless to say, Aubry is NOT happy about this and is fighting her every step in the way. I really don’t know what side I’m on in this case. On one hand, I understand Halle wanting to move to France is she really does not feel safe, and if she will be marrying Martinez, as it is rumored. But I also understand why Aubry is not okay with his daughter moving halfway across the world. I really hope that these two learn to put their personal issues aside and really begin to focus on what is best for their daughter. In the end, she’s the one losing here, as she witnesses her parents going at it all the time. She’s about to turn three and she’s already been recommended to see a therapist, this can’t be good for her in the future. Come on guys, get it together!

Gossip Tidbits

Last week, we reported that Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter’s sister Leslie Carter passed away after a drug overdose. His younger brother Aaron immediately cancelled his current Broadway performances and returned home to be with his family. Nick announced he would continue on his tour, in honor of his sister. Now, when I first heard that, I was a little skeptical. The last thing I would want to do after the unexpected loss of a close relative is continue to work. I would want to be with my family. Well now it turns out that Nick was not present at his sister’s funeral. He claims that his family didn’t let him know when it was going to be, but they have a very different story. Aaron even tweeted that “the truth will reveal itself”, so I suspect that the Carter family is having problems, which is sad, because it’s moments like these that should remind us of how important family is and serve to bring us closer together.

Speaking of family drama, it seems Pitbull has a bit of drama of his own. Pit and his sisters appeared on Cristina Saralegui’s new show, Pa’lante Con Cristina, to discuss how their mother abandoned them at a young age, and was never there for them. Recently, Pitbull’s mother, Alysha Acosta, also appeared on Cristina’s show to refute her children’s claims and give her side of the story. Apparently, Alysha has lived a rough life filled with abuse, both sexual and physical, jail, drugs and prostitution. Of course, none of this justifies abandoning your children, but it kind of puts things in perspective for those who were quick to judge her. Either way, I feel that people shouldn’t go on TV to air out their dirty laundry. What happened to calling each other, or fighting at family events like everyone else? Keep Cristina out of it, people.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone have a lot in common. They were both some of the biggest action stars of the 80’s, and are both still super muscular in their mid-60’s. Not only that, but they are still filming actions movies and they both also injured their shoulders while filming said action movies. So they did what any buddies would do: schedule shoulder surgeries together. Arnold tweeted a picture of the two together at the hospital. How nostalgic. What was your favorite series, Terminator or Rocky?

blueivyblogBeyonce and Jay-Z’s baby girl is not only the youngest person to appear on a record, but she’s also one of the youngest to have her name trademarked. Blue Ivy Carter’s parents filed a patent request for their daughter’s name for possible use on future ventures. I’m not sure if they’re really planning on releasing a line of clothing named Blue Ivy, or if they are just protecting her name from shady people who will try to profit off of them, but it does seem like an odd priority. I guess they think of everything. We also finally met Blue Ivy this week, when Jay-Z posted pictures of the adorable little girl on his blog. You know, I must say, I really admire Beyonce and Jay for taking the high road on this. Many celebrity parents like to sell their baby’s pictures to the highest bidders, or try to set up paparazzi deals, but not Beyonce and Jay-Z. They just shared the personal pictures with us, not trying to get any money out of it, and probably hoping this would stop people trying to sneak pictures of their baby. Nice move. Blue Ivy is adorable and looks a little like both of them, they seem very happy. Congrats again to the new parents!

If you’ve never seen Vicente Fernandez perform live, you better get to it. The Mexican singer has announced that after his current tour, he will be retiring from live performances. This mean no more tours, but he will be open to the possibility of television performances and he will continue to record albums. The legend has stated that “An Artist needs to retire with a lot of dignity, in the right moment, and I think that this year I will say goodbye to all of you, to the public from Central, South America.” Not sure if he may do a goodbye tour for us in North America, but if so, can you say hottest ticket in town?

Hottie of the Week

llcooljblogIn keeping with the mostly Grammy-related theme of this week’s chisme, I have selected Grammy host LL Cool J as this week’s Hottie of the Week. Ladies Love Cool James is right, as the sexy lip-licking rap star has been a hottie for many ladies out there since his “I Need Love” days. At 44, LL is still looking very, very fit and still has that sexy voice and even sexier dimples. He was part of my highlights from the Grammys. It was rough for him, as I’m sure before Whitney’s passing, the show probably had a lighthearted tone to it, and LL’s a funny guy, but he still managed to pull off his hosting duties in a professional way and one that was pleasing to the eyes. Who’s with me?
