February 5, 2012, CST 9:05am CST (Crown Royal Black Salutes Chuck D) This past Thursday, Chicago artist Sam Kirk paid her own tribute to Black History Month at the “Crown Royal Black Salutes Chuck D” event. The artist, known for her unique portrait style and vibrant color choices not only created an original piece for the show, she also worked to curate the exhibition in collaboration with the DuSable Museum.
The evening tribute was an unveiling of an exhibition including photos of and memorabilia from the hip-hop icon, in addition to original artwork. The highlight of the evening was “A Conversation with Chuck D”; where he, along with his wife Dr. Gaye Theresa Johnson, spoke about cultural diversity in the modern age, as well as sharing personal perspectives on race, gender roles and hip-hop culture.
Before the evening ending Chuck D autographed the original artwork. The inscription on Sam Kirk’s piece, entitled “Making Noise”, reads “These colors make noise. Bring it!” Chuck D
Sam’s work will be hanging at the Silver Room, located at 1442 N Milwaukee Avenue, for the rest of Black History Month along with other pieces from the show.
Sam is extremely honored to have participated in the event due to it’s content and purpose. “My work is about empowering communities to stand up for the people they are, the culture they have created and to embrace it.”
The message that Chuck D continues to push into public discourse speaks directly to the artist’s “Provoke Culture” signature theme. Sam, much like the legendary rapper, believes in cultivating culture as it is, while discouraging segregation and discrimination.
A personally thank you goes out to The Chicago Group for giving her the opportunity to participate as well as assisting in the event execution.
