September 1, 2011, 8:10 CST (Feeling like a Princess on Spa Dream Day) The Chicago-based charity, Princess Closet, celebrated its second annual Spa Dream Day Fundraiser on August 28, 2011 raising $1,500.00 for the Scholarship Fund available to high school senior young ladies within the Illinois area. The nonprofit began by offering free dresses and accessories to young ladies trying to afford prom, now offers two scholarships to encourage higher education. Since 2010, Princess Closet has collected over 2,000 dresses and has changed the lives of nearly 800 young ladies through their "Dream Day Events." The Spa Dream Day Fundraiser event included 4 mini spa services from Modern Wave Salon & Spa, varied refreshments, and an auction table that raised $450.00. There were also guest speakers such as Cheryl L. Harris of Profound Touch Mobile Spa who offered meditation techniques and insights on positive energy. Princess Closet’s first 2 scholarships were awarded by Father Brandon of St. Pius V Parish, who supports its mission. Its recipients, Yesenia Dondiego, graduate of Maria H.S., and Dominique Harris, of De La Salle Girls Campus, accepted the scholarships for $1,000 each. The evening concluded with networking and celebration. Princess Closet works with school counselors, social workers, mentorship programs, and local families to provide the young ladies the courage and support to participate. The organization strives to promote self-worth and give participants the much-needed affirmation for staying in school and pushing forward. The organization expects to help over 500 young ladies this year for prom and beyond. Already, they have started their “Dresses for Dreams” dress marathon and have over 800 dresses in storage waiting for that special young lady. The young ladies will participate in a daylong event titled "Dream Day," a pampered day that involves a fashion show, mini workshops ranging from self-esteem building to makeup application and gown "shopping," dress fittings and accessory selection. This year's events will take place at the Gads Hill Center in Pilsen and the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago in Bridgeport. About Princess Closet Princess Closet is a non-profit 501c3 organization made of volunteers who rely on donated dresses, volunteer services and monetary donations to achieve its goals. Princess Closet was created by a single mom, Maria Davalos, who was faced with the struggle of trying to send her daughter to prom and the many expenses of senior year of high school. Maria, who was unable to attend her own prom, did not want her daughter to miss this important milestone in her daughter’s life. She enlisted several of her family members and her daughter to help make her idea a reality. Princess Closet has since transformed into an extremely successful annual event. Currently, the Princess Closet has an Executive Board who is instrumental in shaping and guiding the mission and vision of the Princess Closet.
